The Berlin wall
Weather was a bit cooler today. Tomorrow we are going to head out for a tour of the Olympic stadium. Should be fun!
A city that feels like home
We had a good train trip from Warsaw, the train left at 6.40am so it was an early start for us. We both slept well in our hotel in Warsaw, it was so nice and dark, something that has been lacking since we left Moscow. I just love a dark room and hotels/apartments just don't seem to have dark curtains.
We arrived into Berlin at 12.30, the train station in Berlin is amazing, we had no real difficulties trying to find where we had to go to catch our train to our apartment, it is very well sign posted and easy to understand the metro system!
Out apartment in Berlin is really lovely! It feels like we are living here. We did some groceries and actually cooked dinner, it was nice to eat in, we even had a nice bottle of wine.
Today was 28 degrees, it was absolutely gorgeous. We took a good walk around getting to know the city. I have been here before but that was 13 years ago, it is a bit of a drunken blur!
It really feels like Melbourne here sort of crossed with London. We both feel very at home!
We went to a beer Keller for lunch, sausages and beer, yum!!
So far, I am really enjoying it here. It is quirky, a bit arty and modern but with an historical feel.
The next few days will be spent seeing the sights and enjoying some museums. There is so much to do here, I think you could stay here a year and not even see all of the sights. This is what travel is about!!

Gorgeous Warsaw
The old town square is a little busy with school groups but once you get off the beaten track there are some really magical spots!

Warsaw
We caught the 7 am train from Krakow to Warsaw today. We checked into our hotel, the Novotel Warsaw.
We are only here for 1 night as we head off to Berlin tomorrow. It's funny being in a city for just one day, it sort of feels like I have just gone up to Melbourne for a day of sight seeing.
Warsaw is actually nicer than I thought it would be. The city was rebuilt after being bombed on the war, they recreated the old town as an exact replica of how it was prior. It is quite pretty!
We will spend the day wandering and obviously enjoy some more beer & polish cuisine!
Will send more updates once we get to Berlin, we are both excited to be going there, can't wait!

Last night in Krakow
Last day in Krakow
We head off to Warsaw tomorrow so today is our last day in Krakow.
We have spent the day wandering around taking photos. It really is so pretty here, we have seen a lot, but I feel there is so much more you could see. Anyone could spend hours walking around the old town looking in shops, drifting from cafe's, to bars and restaurants. It is a gastronomical delight!
We spent yesterday at Auschwitz, we arrived early to get there before the big groups. We ended up being there for over 5 hours. I don't really think I could describe the enormity of the crimes committed in both of the camps. Both museums (the former camps) give a good insight into the devastating loss of lives, it was extremely moving and an experience not to be forgotten. The size of the second camp is beyond belief.
Tonight we will head out for a final feast and will be having an early night. Our train leaves at 7.00 am and it is a half hour walk to the station with out back packs. I truly need the walk to, anything to burn off the extra kilojoules!!
Overall we have truly enjoyed Krakow, I would highly recommend it as a travel destination. History, beauty, food and drink - what more could you ask for!!

Oskar Schindler, thunderous storms & anti gay rallies
It was a lovely morning this morning in Krakow. We went out and bought a loaf of fresh bread for breakfast, it was so fresh! Delicious! The bakeries here are just delightful!
We headed out early to go to the Oskar Schindler factory, it is a museum set in the old factory as featured in the movie Schindlers list. It was a good walk and well worth it, the museum was brilliant. The museum depicts what life was like in krakow pre war and during the nazi invasion, truly terrifying! We spent almost 3 hrs at the museum and then took a stroll through the former Jewish area of kamierez, very arty and bohemian!
As we headed up to the old square we noticed major police presence. The sky also appeared quite dark. We sat down for a beer and then heard what sounded like a protest rally, it turned out to be a bunch of right wing extremists marching around the square shouting out (in polish)some sort of anti gay slogans! It was very disturbing! A polish guy next to us yelled something out to them and the police told him off, then people demonstrating took pictures of the guy and clearly threatened him. It is hard to believe such people exist, especially given the atrocities of the past!
Not long after the rally broke up, there were massive thunderstorms. We retreated inside. I feel it was someone from above telling the demonstrators something, perhaps saying you are wrong to be so judgmental, hopefully they listened, but I doubt it!

A dream destination, or is it schoolies week?
We finally arrived in krakow after our flight from St Petersburg. We were delayed in Warsaw by 1 hr so did not end up getting to our apartment until about 8.30. The apartment is great, very close to the old town, quite modern too!
We spent our first day in krakow just strolling around, the weather is amazing, we enjoyed a few beers sitting looking out to the main square, despite all of the tourists it is quite relaxing to sit back, enjoy a drink and do some people watching.
We booked our train ticket to go to Warsaw, we leave Tuesday the 24th at 7.05am, an early start for us that day! We spent the evening sitting by the old square enjoying a few more beers and watching the sun go down, so heavenly and relaxing!
Today we headed out for some photo taking. We first noticed some oddly dressed youths on the way to the old town. When we got into the square we realised there is a youth festival going on, end of term, a bit like schools week. They are all dressed in fancy dress costumes and there is a big stage in the old town playing dance music! Seriously, there goes my gorgeous Krakow experience!!
We are heading to Auschwitz tomorrow, thankfully that will get us away from the partying teens! I know I sound old, but really, who would choose to travel to the gold coast in schools week? Oh well, best make the most of the cheap booze, perhaps if I'm drunk as well they will be a bit more entertaining!!

Pete at St Petersburg airport
It's time to go, Megan & Pete
We are heading off to Poland today. Our flight is at 3.25pm, we will get out to the airport by about midday as aparently it can be quite busy at St Petersburg airport.
We have been in Russia for 11 nights in total. Overall we have had a good time here but I am glad to be moving onto a new destination.
Some of the highlights were Victory Day in Moscow, the Space Museum, the Peterhof fountains, The Hermitage Museum, finally getting into Red Square for the first time, The Kremlin in Moscow, the local beers (Tinkelhoff is a favourite) & of course Mu Mu restaurant.
Our favourite place overall has to be Moscow, it has a really great vibe and is quite cosmopolitan. St Petersburg has been somewhat of a dissapointment, it shows the importance of expectation setting - my expectations of here were very high, however I was dissapointed by the lack of care in the city, the rubbish and the people who urinate in the streets! I think St Petersburg appears to be a place that is preparing for the future but it seems a long way off - I would love to get a high pressure hose and go around cleaning here, it would make such a diference!!
We arrive in Krakow this afternoon at about 5.30pm. We have an apartment booked which will be a really nice change. I am looking forward to the food in Krakow - I will keep everyone updated with some photos.
Well must head off now and prepare to go - bags are already packed, so just a few last minute things to do and we will head to the airport.

I am sorry to say but St Petersburg is not really floating my boat. We still have two days here and despite there being a lot we can still do, I would quite happily go now. I guess that is the downside of pre-planned travel.
We have seen some lovely things here including the hermitage museum and peterhof fountains, the weather has been great as well. We are going to walk over to the fortress today. We also found a really cool bar to go for a few drinks, always a plus.
So, why is it you'd be glad to go?, I hear you say? Well to put it bluntly, it is a bit feral here. You know on a Monday morning when you walk to work and you see beer bottles everywhere, it is like that here all the time, grotty and dirty. From our room I can see drunks pissing in the river, hmmm delightful!
Apart from that I also look forward to getting to krakow where I'm sure it will get dark at a reasonable hour, it is light here until 11.00pm. I know I'm on holidays, but after a day of walking, I am tired and need to sleep!

Overnight trains, scaffolding and construction
We left Moscow on Wednesday night. We checked out of our hotel at midday and headed to the Kremlin to take a look around the grounds. There are a number of cathedrals inside the Kremlin walls as well as gardens and a museum. We skipped the museum knowing that in St Petersburg we would probably get out fill of Museums and Russian culture at the Hermitage. We spent the day wandering the Kremlin grounds before heading out for a last glimpse of Red Square and a bit of sight seeing of the Metro stations. The Metro stations in Moscow are like an art gallery in themselves - full of statues an chandeliers - sure beats Geelong Station!!
We had our final meal at Mu Mu and picked our bags up before catching the metro to Leningradski station to catch the overnight train. We got there early to wait for the train and waited untill 11.00 pm to board. Once on board we were shown to our cabin, there was some fruit on the table and the conductor asked us when we would like breakfast. We set ourselves up for bed, we had bunks, so me being nice took the top bunk. Pete slept pretty well down on the bottom bunk, I had a bit of broken sleep but we awoke okay just before breakfast. We had to track down the conductor to get our brekky but soon she brought along an omelette whcih was okay!
We arrived into St Petersburg at 8.30am, a little bit late but not too bad. We walked to our hotel, Swiss Star. We eventually found the accommodation and were shown to our room. The room seemed quite nice, we are paying just over $100 a night here with a shared bathroom, but given there is not a lot of people I don't think we actually have to share.
We headed out for a walk around St Petersburg, the weather was quite warm, a little bit of wind. We soon relaised that St Petersburg is under heavy construction and there are streets all ripped up, there is scaffolding everywhere. We wandered around for most of the rest of the day and decided that on Friday (the next day) we would go see the Hermitage Museum.
Today (Friday), we actually slept in, yes of all miracles, despte a very light room, we slept until 9.00am! We headed out to The Hermitage at about midday. We had pre-booked our tickets so got priority entrance, not that it mattered, there were no queues! We spent the afternoon wandering around the museum, it is spectacular, the building it self is a palace and it just beautiful. The art and artefacts it holds only adds to the splendour.
We have a second day at The Hermitage tommorow so we only saw one floor, but that took 4 hours!! From there we went to O'Hooligans's Irish pub for a few pints of cider before grabbing a bite to eat at a pasta restaurant - a bit like La Porchetta! We headed back to our room, it now appears we are the only guests here - very odd!! It is still light and it is 10.30. Time to go to bed! We have another day ahead of us at the Museum tomorrow, I am most looking forward to seeing the French art of Picasso, Cezanne and Monet, no doubt it will be beautiful.

Barricades, bolshevites & hari chrishna's
Moscow has certainly proved to be interesting. People are very tough to crack and I am constantly trying to melt their icy resolve! They continue to speak to you even though they know u do not understand. Their dress sense is a cross between bogan and sheik, lots of leggings worn as pants and dangerous high heels, not at all practical for cobbled streets! Even the female police wear heels.
Victory day was great. We did not get to see the full parade, security around red square was tight. But we did see some tanks and other military vehicles driving down the main street. We also saw a communist march and were later asked to sign a communist petition, or at least we think that's what it was!!
We finally got into red square for the first time. We had to go through 3 security checks and have our bags searched. Red square is amazing! St basils cathedral is a massive kaleidoscope of colours! There were people everywhere celebrating victory day. Lots of old soldiers with their medals and children waving flags. Police and army were everywhere. It was such a spectacle and so good to be a part of, something we would not have experienced had we come at another time.
The streets were closed to traffic all day and people walked through the streets on mass. We even saw a bunch of hari chrishna's parading and giving out treats!
We leave tonight on an overnight train. Moscow has truly been eye opening and amazing. I look forward to the nest leg of the journey!!

The Kremlin Moscow
Moscow, Moscow......... You know the song!
Well after a long flight we are in Moscow! Our flight was pretty good actually, apart from one annoying child who's parents did not seem to care if he ran up and down the aisle screaming!
Our stop in Singapore was really good, we had a beer and did a few laps of the airport. I loved the toilets their, they have a little screen where u can rate your satisfaction, simply fab! Will post a photo!
We arrived on time into Moscow, got through customs with no hassle but then went to get money out and Pete's card got swallowed by the ATM. Had to call the bank to cancel the card! Painful! Managed to get some money out using my card later on the day, thankfully.
We got the train into town, pretty easy but were then confronted by the metro, very challenging but fun all the same. We worked it out and made our way to the hotel passing red square on the way and catching a glimpse of St Basils Cathedral.
Our hotel is really nice, comfy and brekky this morning was really good.
We have done heaps of walking and have found some decent places to eat, one called Mu Mu, gotta love a good bowl of borscht for under $3!
Tomorrow is Victory day and it has been quite crazy with police everywhere and red square is blocked off. We are hoping tomorrow once the parade is over we can get into red square.
Moscow so far is proving to be exciting, challenging but also eye opening. It is very different but I quite like it. I look forward to seeing more and hopefully setting foot in red square!!

1 more sleep and nice new sheets
Well what a week it has been! Only 3 days of work this week but it has been very eventful. Monday we had a visit from one of our former team mates and went out for a lovely lunch to celebrate his 30th birthday, upon our return from lunch we walked back into the office to hear the news that Osama Bin Laden had been killed. The news has been completely dominated by talk of the assassination ever since, of course conspiracy theories are already starting to flow. The world is on a terror alert for fear of repercussions from Taliban supporters. It has been an historical week!
Today has been my first day of leave and I spent most of the day tidying the house, I put some nice new sheets on the bed and we finished our packing. Pete had the day off too so we have pretty much managed to get everything ready to go for tomorrow.
It is only 1 sleep until we go which is really hard to believe because I have been counting down for so long now and finally the time has come for us to go! I must head off to bed now, this time tomorrow we will be on the plane and well on our way, some well deserved rest is in order. Good Night :-)

3 working days, 2 live mice and two pairs of shoes
The last week has finally arrived. I have 3 days of work this week and Pete has 4. Our bags are packed, apart from the last minute items that we still need to put in.
We had a really good weekend - it all commenced with the Royal Wedding. What an amazing occasion. Kate Middleton (now the Dutchess of Cambridge) looked just beautiful and it was clear to see they are a couple very much in love. We celebrated with bangers & mash and a bottle of champagne. I managed to fall asleep before the big kiss on the balcony, I woke as Pete was turning off the TV.
On Saturday we had a small hiccup - Pete's shoes have ahole in them! So we rushed into town to get a new pair, can't have him walking around Europe with a hole in his shoes. Typically though we found nothing in Geelong, so we headed up to Werribee Plaza yesterday and he got a new pair of Sketchers. Luckily for me I also got another pair of shoes too (ha, love turning a shopping trip for Pete into a shopping trip for me!)
Mac (the cat) had a good weekend too. Obviously sensing we are heading away, Mac has decided to shower us with gifts and presented us with two live mice this weekend. The first was on Saturday night, unfortunately it managed to escpape out the garage door before Pete could catch it. The second was yesterday, luckily I saw Mac about to come in his cat door and closed it just in time. We are not sure exactly what happened to the mouse, it was last seen laying on it's side unable to walk (I felt sorry for it!), but I am guessing Mac ate it, unless it had a miraculous recovery and managed to escape.
Mum and Dad flew to Penang yesterday for a 3 week stay which means we will not see them for 6 weeks. I am sure they will have a really nice holiday, although I think Mum was a bit sad to leave Molly (the dog) behind. She is spending 3 weeks in the dog kennel.
Well, I must head off as I am off to boxing this morning. Need to work off all the calories from the weekend and get myself mentally focussed for the week ahead, this may prove to be difficult though, because the excitement of going away is taking up most of my thoughts!

Typically though we found nothing in Geelong, so we headed up to Werribee Plaza yesterday and he got a new pair of Sketchers. Luckily for me I also got another pair of shoes too (ha, love turning a shopping trip for Pete into a shopping trip for me!)
Mac (the cat) had a good weekend too. Obviously sensing we are heading away, Mac has decided to shower us with gifts and presented us with two live mice this weekend. The first was on Saturday night, unfortunately it managed to escpape out the garage door before Pete could catch it. The second was yesterday, luckily I saw Mac about to come in his cat door and closed it just in time. We are not sure exactly what happened to the mouse, it was last seen laying on it's side unable to walk (I felt sorry for it!), but I am guessing Mac ate it, unless it had a miraculous recovery and managed to escape.
Mum and Dad flew to Penang yesterday for a 3 week stay which means we will not see them for 6 weeks. I am sure they will have a really nice holiday, although I think Mum was a bit sad to leave Molly (the dog) behind. She is spending 3 weeks in the dog kennel.
Well, I must head off as I am off to boxing this morning. Need to work off all the calories from the weekend and get myself mentally focussed for the week ahead, this may prove to be difficult though, because the excitement of going away is taking up most of my thoughts!
